I'm an incredibly lucky person. I have the kind of luck that blows some peoples' minds — as in, getting my wallet and ID returned to me after leaving it behind in an NYC cab. (Twice!)
I'm so lucky, in fact, that I met an actual human beauty encyclopedia: Ms. Lucy Binetti.
As a beauty writer, it's been important to develop a go-to roster of contacts and experts in the field, and Lucy in particular has been an absolute treasure. As one of Ulta's Prestige Beauty Advisors for years, I use her like the beauty industry consultant that every writer in my field wishes she had.
Plus, when it comes to sensitive skin? She reigns supreme. Her product picks have never let me down — not even once — and for this particular article, her selections are also cruelty-free.
After perusing Lucy's top picks in cosmetics from 2017 at Ulta below, check out her skincare picks here! Then, be sure to head over to her author page on Top5.com for more of her beauty advice (or to my most recent Brit. Co. article on hair oils to see more of her expert tips at work!).
Here are 12 essential beauty buys from Ulta, according to an Ulta Insider. They're customer-approved, reasonably priced, and 100% cruelty-free!
bareMinerals BARESKIN Pure Brightening Serum Foundation SPF 20 ($30): BareMinerals provides excellent coverage. Meanwhile, this brightening, serum foundation is an industry innovator, standing up to the multi-tasking BB and CC creams inspired by K-Beauty.
2.) UNDER-EYE CORRECTOR.
Tarte Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector ($25): If you've got dark circles you're looking to correct, this product pull from Tarte will keep them covered. The entire Amazonian clay line is a beauty blogger favorite.
3.) MULTI-TASKING EYE CREAM.
First Aid Beauty Eye Duty Triple Remedy ($36): This skincare-meets-cosmetics eye cream is used and loved by Selena Gomez herself. It's also been featured on Brit + Co.
4.) BROW FILLER.
Urban Decay Cosmetics Brow Beater Micro Fine Brow Pencil and Brush ($20): Of the many brow products around, this one is Lucy's top pick. It rocks for the way it stays put, even in hot, muggy weather.
5.) LOWER LINER.
Julep When Pencil Met Gel Long-Lasting Eyeliner ($16): Long-lasting liner that won't budge? #Need. Liner always makes such a difference, and this purchase avoids the whole "raccoon eye" conundrum.
6.) UPPER LINER.
Too Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Eyeliner ($20): All I can say is that your perfect set of cat-eye wingtips awaits.
Stila Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow Liquid Eyeshadow ($21): Beauty influencers like Byrdie's favorite — @katiejanehughes — made glossy lids and liquid shadows blow-up in 2017... So this eye gloss applicator is def on-trend. Plus, I know for a fact that she bought this for herself recently, so you know it's gotta be tip-top.
Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara ($23): Mascara is necessary in any beauty-lover's toolkit — some even suspect that it runs in our blood. Lucy and I have spoken at length about the many different applicator brushes in the biz, so this selection should definitely not be taken lightly.
9.) CHEEK COLOR
Lorac Tantalizer Buildable Bronzing Powder ($32): Lorac is one of those stand alone companies that doesn't test on animals, but that also doesn't shell out the big bucks for a leaping bunny certification. We have it on our Ulta expert's word, however, that this bad boy is cruelty-free. P.S. These products are fab on sensitive skin because they're oil-free, paraben free, and fragrance free.
CoverFX Custom Enhancer Drops ($42): Available in many universal shades of shimmer, these pigmented highlighters all look gorgeous on.
Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick ($24): Lucy is a total lipstick-a-holic. If she vouches for this matte lip color, it's good. This shade in particular looks like the color Romeo I received from Lawless, which I'll be featuring shortly.
12.) SET IT.
Urban Decay Cosmetics Chill Cooling and Hydrating Makeup Setting Spray ($32): This buy keeps the makeup on your face — versus running down your face — for up to 12 hours. Just get it, set it and go!
