The number 1 anti-aging tip of all time? Wear SPF. Hollywood dermatologist, Dr. Lancer, has been quoted recommending you wear SPF unless you need a flashlight to see. Why? Because sun damage is the leading cause of the signs of aging. Plus, the rise of skincare-meets-cosmetics has resulted in a number of skin-nourishing sunscreens that contain potent ingredients making them good for your skin.
I once heard that 20 minutes of sun damage depletes two weeks' worth of your body's collagen production, but the most commonly cited risks of UV-exposure range from hyper-pigmentation, burning, fine lines, and wrinkles, to actual cancer. That's why a quality SPF needs to be a regular part of your skincare regimen, even on cloudy days, and preferably along with a quality vitamin C serum.

Lastly, if you're worried about the toxicity of your sunscreen, you can use a website called EWG — which stands for Environmental Working Group — to see what the research says. Note that mineral SPF's (i.e. Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, etc.) deflect sun's rays, versus the chemical alternatives which are absorbed into the cell and helps slow or prevent sun damage, or oxidation, from occurring.
And now, allow me to introduce you to my current leading lady (BAE?):
1. The Anti-Aging SPF.
Kerstin Florian Correcting Multi-Vitamin Day Creme SPF 30 ($62).
I love Kerstin Florian's sunscreen and have been using it daily. The rep who told me about it, Morgan, let me know she uses it every single day — and it's easy to see why. First of all, it's a mineral sunscreen infused with free radical-fighting antioxidants (vitamins C, E, and B5) with an SPF of 30-40. It's cruelty-free and appropriate for all skin types. Its ingredients include skin superfoods like algae, cucumber, and raspberry leaf — all buzzy ingredients in anti-aging skincare RN. It also hydrates, smoothes, heals, tones, and best of all, is anti-inflammatory. I love it so much I'm using the millennial-favorite phrase "BAE" for the very first time to describe it — even though I promised Tom I would never use the term.
2. Next on the List:
Lancer Skincare Sheer Fluid Sun Shield ($55).
When I run out of Kerstin Florian, trust and believe (stole that phrase from my B+C editor!) that I'll be starting on this bottle of Dr. Lancer's sun shield. I am basically obsessed with Hollywood's favorite dermatologist; like the stalker of youthful skin that I am, I even keep his cell number in my phone. (Once I pocket dialed him and wanted to die!). Anyway, his luxe SPF is known for its weightless and greaseless texture, which makes for seamless application that also primes. True to Lancer Skincare's luxe reputation, his formulation includes dermatology's leading anti-aging ingredients, like Gamay Grape Stem Cells (to reduce UV damage), Sunflower Sprout Extracts (for glow), and Chamomile Extract (to soothe). The cruelty-free sunscreen has also been praised by both Vanity Fair and Khloe Kardashian!
3. Coming Soon:
Stila Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20
I tried this tinted moisturizer as a sample from Sephora and was really impressed by their revamped formula, which contains some of skincare's buzziest ingredients and went on beautifully. It boasts buildable coverage with light-diffusing pigments that brighten your tone and creates a fab blurring effect to minimize imperfections. I'm also a huge fan of one of its ingredients, Hyaluronic Acid, which plumps skin visibly by being an ace hydrator. You'll also benefit from the cell-saving antioxidants like Ginseng and Gingko Biloba, soothing Chamomile, and healing vitamin E. It says it contains Vitamin A (i.e. Retinol), but I'll need to do some more digging because that's not a typical daytime ingredient.
Suntegrity Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen & Primer SPF 30 ($45).
Also a favorite on Brit + Co., this widely loved green beauty brand's line of SPF's go on like clean, green, non-toxic BB creams. Everyone raves about Suntegrity. It's suitable for all skin types, plus it's vegan — not a single animal harmed in its making. It contains the moisturizing and plumping powerhouse, Hyaluronic Acid, as well as Jojoba to nourish, Aloe Vera to soothe, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich Green Tea, as well as Zinc Oxide, which provides mineral sun protection. The Credo Beauty rep loves this formula of theirs the best.
5. Green Makeup Multi-Tasker:
Lily Lolo Mineral Foundation SPF 15 ($22) or BB Cream ($22).
I tried out the British line's award-winning mineral foundation powder with a built-in SPF 15. Loved by Elle, the toning, vegan, and anti-bacterial bad boy contains those coveted anti-inflammatory ingredients as well. I was a diehard Laura Mercier pressed powder wear-er for years, but now that I want to clean up my regimen, I've been on the lookout for the best powder foundations to try.
6. My Dermatologist's Pick:
Elta MD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40 ($27).
My dermatologist looks like a natural version of Kim Kardashian, which is why I trust her with all things beauty. She swears by this derm-favorite SPF, which is available in a tint, as well. It's safe for all skin types — even acne-prone — and contains ingredients like the anti-aging exfoliators, alphahydroxy acids (AHA's), which combat hyper pigmentation. I looked it up on EWG and it has the safest toxicity rating, making it a total winner all around.
7. Ultra-Sensitive Skin-Friendly:
Naturopathica Daily UV Defense Cream SPF 50 ($58).
This top shelf green beauty brand was recommended to me by a friend and fellow skincare-snob with extremely sensitive skin. It contains antioxidants galore, hydrating shea butter, healing vitamin E, coconut oil, micronized Zinc Oxide SPF, and anti-inflammatory Camellia oleifera leaf extract. Another cool element is that it contains ceramide-rich deep sea enzymes which fortify and replenish your skin's natural barrier, which is extra important when you consider that most sensitive skin is actually caused by a compromised skin barrier to begin with. Of course, it's also non-toxic.
8. Curious About:
Mad Hippie Facial SPF 30+ ($20).
I love the name of this line and I do hear good things! Their facial SPF is a great budget buy and provides broad-spectrum (both UVA and UVB) protection. This particular formula also contains vitamins C and E — which protect and nourish — as well as retexturing ferulic acid, pH-friendly carrot seed, exfoliating raspberry, and avocado oils for hydration. How's that for a superfood medley?
Pevonia Botanica Ligne Speciale YouthRenew Tinted Cream SPF 30 ($51).
This luxury skincare find from DermStore is a specially formulated anti-aging moisturizer from Hungary. It works best with fair skin tones but photographs beautifully; I actually don't use it frequently, but grab it for nights when I'll be taking photos. It ingredients include marine collagen, which smoothes lines and wrinkles; fruit and vegetable extracts to brighten; shea butter to hydrate; and a Flash Action Unisphere technology to brighten and firm skin in minutes. The mineral sunscreen it contains is Titanium Dioxide, which can sometimes be irritating as far as mineral ingredients go, or cause tiny bumps (milia?) that look like clogged pores. That being said, the coverage is so fantastic anyway that I use it pre-photo opp. I'll include a photo of me wearing it below...
10. Green Blogger's Tip:
Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream Tinted Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($55).
Green beauty blogger Jenna Schrek of No Whey Lady recommends this luxe newcomer in the world of green beauty. I haven't tried it so I can't speak from experience, but I'm definitely curious about this non-toxic newcomer. It contains a cell-regenerating moisturizer, broadband mineral sun protection, and skin-nourishing ingredients (i.e. anti-inflammatory ingredients, antioxidants, fatty acids, and photo-nutrients) while working light a light makeup.
Since writing this post, I discovered one more facial SPF that you absolutely need to know about. I'm writing something up to share and it should be ready soon... Hint: It's by Volition Beauty!
